Yellow Ghost Ball Python Project

Scientific Name: Python Regius
Common Name: Ball Python, Royal Python
Location: West Africa, Ghana
Size: Adults typically between 36"-48", around 1200g-2400g
Housing: Adults can live in a 40 or 55-gallon tank (or equivalent)
Experience Level Needed: Novice, Intermediate

The ghost (or it's true name which is hypomelanistic) morph is a recessive gene. The visible changes vary from snake-to-snake, but generally fades out all of the colors to the point that it looks likes it's in shed all the time :) The sheds from a ghost are patternless. The ghost is becoming a key component in many other morphs and are just beautiful animals by themselves.

We have had many dramatic problems with our ghost project. First we had an incompatible 'green' ghost male. We then borrowed a male in '07 from a friend (at a price) and ended up losing our butts because we only produce a single male that didn't sell. In addition, we had raised up 3 'het ghost' girls and only 1 of them was a het, the other two produced two clutches and not a single ghost to show for it. Our ghost project has dwindled quite a bit because of it

This is is the ghost male that we produced in '07. We're putting him to the test in '09. He's bigger and a bit prettier than my previous ghost male.

This is the only het ghost female out of 3 that proved out for us. She produced a nice baby in '07 and another in '08.

One of the cool things that came out of our fiasco with the 'green' ghost is that we are now owners of some babies that are het for both 'green' ghost and yellow ghost. We're hoping these will be able to breed in '09 and we can possibly produce some 'super ghosts' which would (in theory) be both ghost strains showing through in one snake. This is the male. He bred a normal female in '08 for some practice and I'm going to hold back one of those girls. Richard and Gib are getting some free perks with the other ones I'm not keeping.

This is the female from the 'super ghost' project. She's the sister to the male above. She'll be right on the borderline for the '09 season. Fingers are crossed.

This girl wins the prize for the longest name in my collection :) Her name is an acronym (as all of mine are) for "Het Green Ghost Possible Het Yellow Ghost". Her dad was the green ghost and her mom was a het yellow ghost. She's going to be close to go for the '09 season as well.
